Media Literacy and Democracy: Teaching Students to Decode the World

ABSTRACT
In today’s increasingly complex and media-saturated world, it is essential for all students to be able think critically about the messages they see, read and hear. This is especially crucial given the global “infodemic” of disinformation that has shaken the foundations of education and democracy. The richly metacognitive process of constructivist media decoding (CMD) engages students from different backgrounds and skill levels in the analysis of media messages through inquiry, reflection, and participatory learning. Drawing on examples from history, global studies, language, science and health, this highly interactive presentation will demonstrate how to integrate media decoding to teach core content across the curriculum, including explorations of socioemotional and multicultural learning, diversity, and inclusion. Participants will receive access to hundreds of free media literacy lessons and resources for integrating CMD into their own teaching, and to share with educators in their school districts.
BIOGRAPHY
Cyndy Scheibe is the founder and Executive Director of Project Look Sharp at Ithaca College. She co-authored the book Teaching Children to Decode the World: Media Literacy Across the Curriculum (2022, ASCD) with Chris Sperry, as well as The Teacher's Guide to Media Literacy: Critical Thinking in a Multimedia World (2012, Sage/Corwin) with Faith Rogow. She is also Dana Professor of Psychology at Ithaca College, teaching courses in developmental psychology, media research, and media literacy, and coordinates the college’s interdisciplinary Media Literacy Minor. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development (1987) from Cornell University and was a founding board member of the National Association for Media Literacy Education.

თანამედროვე სამყაროში რთულია იყო წარმატებული, აქტიური, პასუხისმგებლობიანი მოქალაქე, თუ არ იცი, როგორ იპოვო, აირჩიო, შეაფასო, გაფილტრო, გადაამოწმო, შექმნა, გაავრცელო და მოიხმარო ინფორმაცია და აიღო პასუხისმგებლობა ინფორმაციის შექმნასა დაგავრცელებაზე. ეს კომპეტენციები ეხმარება თანამედროვე ადამიანს, რომ რაციონალურ საფუძველზე მონაწილეობა მიიღოს ეკონომიკურ ცხოვრებაში, დასაქმდეს, შეიძინოს და გაასხვისოს, მართოს თავისი ქონება და ა.შ. ეს კომპეტენციები ეხმარება ადამიანს მნიშვნელოვანი პიროვნული გადაწყვეტილებების მიღებისას, ოპტიმალური საგანმანათლებლო, კარიერული თუ საზოგადოებრივი განვითარების გზების შესარჩევისას და ეს შესაძლებლობები გლობალური მოქალაქეობის პირობებში უსაზღვრებოა.
მედიაწიგნიერების განათლება მსოფლიოს ყველა ქვეყნის მოქალაქის ძირითად უფლებად მიიჩნევა და აძლევს თვითგამოხატვის საშუალებას, უფლებას ინფორმაციაზე, რომელიც დემოკრატიის მხარდამჭერ ინსტრუმენტად არის აღიარებული. ინფორმაციული განათლება არაერთი სახელმწიფოს სასწავლო გეგმის ნაწილია, ასევე, ეს არის დამატებითი, არაფორმალური განათლების ნაწილი, რომელსაც ადამიანი მთელი ცხოვრების განმავლობაში იღრმავებს მედიაწიგნიერების თვალსაზრისით.
